Attend a SAAD Course and be taught by the country’s most experienced dental sedation teachers!
The SAAD Teaching Faculty has oral surgeons, paediatric dentists, special care dentists, clinical psychologists, GDPs, dental nurses, peripatetic sedationists and resuscitation officers - all experienced teachers.
The SAAD Assesed Sedation Nurse (SASN) scheme
This STAC accredited training scheme is suitable for dental nurses who are new to sedation, and can nominate a suitable supervsior for their superised clinical experience.
The two day blended format course provides the knowledge and skills training for for new starters.
Day One: access to the recording of the Theorteical Elements of the SAAD National Course (the recording will be available until 26 June)
Day Two: in person day in London on 27 June, the Practical Elements
The stages of the scheme
Attendance of the practical day is followed by the supervised clinical experience, and submisison of your completed SASN portfolio for each of the techniques you are completing the scheme for.
You will need to submit a completed supervisor nomination form (SNF), and receive confirmation of approval before you can commence your supervised experience.
Finally, there is an online assessment, completed at a time to suit you.
So, if you are new to sedation completing the SASN scheme is the ideal option for you!
Stages of the scheme:
- Nominate a clinical supervisor
- Attend the two day course
- Complete supervised clinical experience
- Submit your final SASN portfolio(s) for moderation
- Pass the online assessment before March 2027
- Receive your certificate confirming that you have completed your sedation training in accordance with the IACSD Standards.

Access to the recording
Once the fee is received you will be sent the link to the recording. Please allow a couple of days for the link to be set up for you.
Nominate a supervisor
Please complete a supervsior nomination form and email it to schemes@saad.org.uk once you have regsitered.
It is possible to nominate additional supervisors by emailing a completed form for each supervsior.
Payments by an employer
If your registration fee will be paid by a third party; please ensure that you enter, under 'purchaser info', all of the details they require to appear on the invoice.

Life Support Training
Practitioners must be able to provide age-appropriate immediate life support.
SAAD Life Support course (ILS training)

Re ILS training - practitioners must be able to provide age-appropriate immediate life support as defined by the main elements of the Resuscitation Council (UK) ILS and PILS training programmes. It is not essential to undertake a Resuscitation Council (UK) accredited ILS/PILS course. Alternative courses with equivalent content which are adapted to the needs of dental practice are acceptable: these might also include the management of common sedation, medical and dental emergencies. This training should be renewed annually.
Course Content
- Aspects of anxiety and pain control, treatment planning and patient assessment. The use of behavioural management, selection and appropriate use of drugs for sedation techniques.
- Physiology, anatomy and pharmacology relevant to Conscious Sedation.
- Organisation of the dental team, medico-legal aspects of sedation, record keeping, psychological and physiological monitoring of the sedated patient.
- Revision of the requirements of the General Dental Council in relation to the provision of Basic Life Support. Current UK Resuscitation Council Guidelines will be provided.
- Clinical cases of various conscious sedation techniques are assessed and practitioners may have practical experience of Inhalation Sedation.
