The SAAD Teaching Faculty has oral surgeons, paediatric dentists, special care dentists, clinical psychologists, GDPs, dental nurses, peripatetic sedationists and resuscitation officers - all experienced teachers.

- One day online, one day in person.

New to sedation?
For dental hygienists/therapists who are new to sedation, attending both days, the Theoretical Elements Webinar and the in person Practical Elements Course, followed by the online assessment and supervised clinical experience (completed by November 2027) is the SAAD Assessed Sedation Hygienist/Therapist (SASH/T scheme). This training scheme follows the IACSD syllabus
The scheme is suitable for new starters, and completion will allow dental hygienists/therapists to provide inhalation sedation in accordance with the IACSD standards.
So, if you are new to sedation completing the SASH/T scheme is the ideal option for you.
Stages of the scheme:
- Nominate a clinical supervisor
- Attend or watch the Theoretical Elements Webinar
- Attend the Practical Elements Course
- Pass the online assessment
- Complete supervised clinical experience (provide sedation for ten cases, and provide both the sedation and the treatment for five of those cases)
- Submit your final portfolio for moderation before November 2027

It is possible to add further supervisors by emailing further completed forms.

Aim: To explain the principles of safe and effective inhalation sedation
Learning outcomes:
- To describe patient assessment and treatment planning
- To describe inhalation sedation techniques including administration, monitoring, recovery & discharge
- To describe the management of sedation-related complications
CPD hours: Six hours, fulfilling GDC learning outcomes A, B, C & D.
Dental hygienists/therapists already experienced in the provision of inhalation sedation can attend the Theoretical Elements Webinar as an update.
Practical day - 14 November
The practical day takes place in the Graduate Centre on the Mile End campus of Queen Mary, University of London E1 4NS.

ILS Training

Re ILS training - practitioners must be able to provide age-appropriate immediate life support as defined by the main elements of the Resuscitation Council (UK) ILS and PILS training programmes. It is not essential to undertake a Resuscitation Council (UK) accredited ILS/PILS course. Alternative courses with equivalent content which are adapted to the needs of dental practice are acceptable: these might also include the management of common sedation, medical and dental emergencies. This training should be renewed annually.
