Description
This course is designed for GDPs, hygienists, dental nurses, and the wider dental team, including front-of-house and reception staff, who provide support to patients that are anxious about their dental treatment.
Overview of the course
The course will provide practical, evidence-based strategies for managing low to moderate dental anxiety in everyday practice, complementing sedation and supporting safe, patient-centred care. It will also offer a taster introduction to CBT-informed approaches for dental fear.
The course will be delivered by national experts in dental anxiety and behavioural management:

It is ideal for anyone looking to embed behavioural management or develop CBT-informed dental fear services within their practice.
Aligned with NHS guidance, this course intends to be practical, skills-focused, and immediately applicable in practice.
Learning objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the nature of dental anxiety
- Assess the level of dental anxiety amongst patients, and identify the specific anxiety triggers for each patient
- Implement techniques for alleviating dental anxiety
- Outline the appropriateness and effectiveness of different techniques for alleviating dental anxiety, and use that information to guide the choice of method used.
- Understand when it would be appropriate to refer a patient for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and be able to provide an overview of what would be involved.
The content of this course meets GDC Development Outcomes A and C.
