Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for people with dental fear and anxiety: A toolkit
A unique collaboration between SAAD and the King's College London Dental Institute Health Psychology Service has resulted in the publication of a guide to Cognitive Behavioural Techniques for people with dental fear and anxiety. Essentially the toolkit is aimed at dental healthcare professionals who wish to work with people with dental fear, combining effective and proven cognitive behavioural techniques with pharmacological management approaches.
The toolkit comprises
- An overview of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
- A review and bibliography of relevant literature including reviews of effectiveness
- A guide to typical CBT sessions for individuals with high levels of dental anxiety
- Example behavioural experiments
- Homework tasks
- Assessment materials for patients
- Guidance on producing written materials for patients
- Resources for graded exposure
- Resources for challenging common ‘unhelpful beliefs’
- A guide to evaluation including assessment scales.
Photocopyable resources and links to video and sound materials to support CBT are included. Copies of the toolkit are available at a discounted rate for members of SAAD. We also plan to develop training courses in Cognitive Behavioural Techniques for dental anxiety, based on this toolkit.
Dental Treatment for Anxious patients
Is designed to be given to patients informing them of all the various techniques available to help the anxious patient. It gives a description of the use of oral, inhalation and intravenous sedation and mentions the use of acupuncture and hypnosis. It will help the patient decide, together with the practitioner, the technique most suitable to the procedure and degree of sedation required.
Intravenous Sedation
This leaflet explains the technique of intravenous sedation and includes pre-treatment & post- treatment advice. It fulfils the requirement of giving the patient written pre-treatment instructions and answers some of the frequently asked questions patients may ask.
Confidential Medical History Forms
A fully medical history is essential for any dental treatment and this form will be useful for obtaining medical details for all patients within your practice, not just those who are having sedation. It does, of course, include specific questions required for those having sedation.
Conscious Sedation Record
The recording of the details of sedation is extremely important and a customised form simplifies this process. This form has a preoperative check list and allows the recording of all the necessary patient data during the sedation procedure such as oxygen saturation, blood pressure respiration etc.
You are less likely to miss recording information if it is all printed out for you and you are prompted to record it.
Please note that the card does not have a patient consent section. A suitable consent form may be downloaded from the Department of Health website. Consent Form.
Conscious Sedation. A Referral Guide for dental Practitioners
This booklet was produced as a joint initiative by the Dental Sedation Teachers Group & SAAD. Conscious sedation is an important part of pain and anxiety control. The application of conscious sedation techniques can greatly help in the provision of dental care, but not all practitioners provide the technique. These practitioners may choose to refer patients who require sedation to practitioners who are happy to accept referrals. This booklet is designed to assist the referring dentist in patient selection, treatment planning and the referral process.
