Publications to help with the provision of Conscious Sedation
SAAD produce a number of publications to help dentists practising sedation.
Dental Treatment for Anxious patients
Is designed to be given to patients informing them of all the various techniques available to help the anxious patient. It gives a description of the use of oral, inhalation and intravenous sedation and mentions the use of acupuncture and hypnosis. It will help the patient decide, together with the practitioner, the technique most suitable to the procedure and degree of sedation required.
Intravenous Sedation
This leaflet explains the technique of intravenous sedation and includes pre-treatment & post- treatment advice. It fulfils the requirement of giving the patient written pre-treatment instructions and answers some of the frequently asked questions patients may ask.
Confidential Medical History Forms
A fully medical history is essential for any dental treatment and this form will be useful for obtaining medical details for all patients within your practice, not just those who are having sedation. It does, of course, include specific questions required for those having sedation.
Conscious Sedation Record
The recording of the details of sedation is extremely important and a customised form simplifies this process. This form has a preoperative check list and allows the recording of all the necessary patient data during the sedation procedure such as oxygen saturation, blood pressure respiration etc.
You are less likely to miss recording information if it is all printed out for you and you are prompted to record it.
Please note that the card does not have a patient consent section. A suitable consent form may be downloaded from the Department of Health website. Consent Form.
Conscious Sedation. A Referral Guide for dental Practitioners
This booklet was produced as a joint initiative by the Dental Sedation Teachers Group & SAAD. Conscious sedation is an important part of pain and anxiety control. The application of conscious sedation techniques can greatly help in the provision of dental care, but not all practitioners provide the technique. These practitioners may choose to refer patients who require sedation to practitioners who are happy to accept referrals. This booklet is designed to assist the referring dentist in patient selection, treatment planning and the referral process.
