Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I attend if I am not on the UK Dental Register?
A: Yes, as there are no clinical sessions with patients
Q: Will I then be qualified to practice sedation in my practice?
A: You will have enough knowledge and training to do sedation, but clinical experience will need to be gained first. This can be done in your practice if there is an experienced sedationist there already. If not, you may like to approach someone on our list of mentors.
Q: Will my Dental Nurse be qualified to assist in Conscious Sedation once she has attended the course?
A: She is not qualified but she is appropiatly trained in respect of the current guidelines. A certificate of attendance is awarded at the end of the course.
Q: What textbooks can I read in preparation?
A: We recommend:
D. Craig & M. Skelly Practical Conscious Sedation
ISBN 185097070XMeechan, Robb & Seymour Pain and Anxiety Control for the Conscious Dental Patient
ISBN 0-19-262848N.M. Girdler & C.M. Hill Sedation in Dentistry
ISBN 0-7236-1052-5
Q: Can I attend as a Therapist or Hygienist?
A: Yes. You are not able to administer sedation, but you will be able to treat patients under sedation if the sedationist stays in the surgery. Your knowledge will be of benefit. The Dental Nurse’s course is generally more suitable.
Q: Is there an age limit for attendance on the SAAD national course?
A: No, although it is unlikely that a dental nurse will want to attend under the age of 16 years.
